Special Exhibition 'Yokai – The Representation of "Mononoke" from the Edo Period to the Present Day –'

Period: June 14 - August 29
(Closed on: July 3, July 24, August 28)

Yokai are also known as "mononoke" and have been featured in various literary and art works since ancient times. Matsuo Basho also described his visit to the Sessho-seki (Killing Stone) of the "Nine-tailed Fox Legend" in his travelogue 'Oku no Hosomichi' (The Narrow Road to the Deep North). Furthermore, Edo period painters such as Yosa Buson, Toriyama Sekien, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi left behind works depicting yokai, and their influence was passed down to many writers and continues to this day.

In this exhibition, we will explore how yokai and other worlds have been expressed in painting, literature, and more, from the Edo period to the present day. Please enjoy seeing the impact yokai have had on Japanese culture and the characteristics unique to each era.
