Yamagata City Designated Tangible Cultural Property: Painting of Huang Shigong, a hanging scroll, by Yosa Buson (yosa buson), Edo Period (18th Century). From the collections of Taizo Ehara and Isao Ogata, owned by the museum.
This is Huang Shigong (Kōseki-kō), a hermit from China's Qin Dynasty, depicted by Yosa Buson, a painter and haiku poet from the Edo period.
Huang Shigong is legendary for bestowing a military treatise by Taigong Wang (Taigō-bō) upon Zhang Liang (Chōryō), one of the "Three Heroes" who founded the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.).
Taigong Wang refers to Lü Shang (Ryo Shō), a famous general of China's Zhou Dynasty (approx. 1050 B.C. - 256 B.C.) around the 11th century B.C.
Buson was born in Kyōhō 1 (1716). At the age of 22, he became a disciple of the haiku poet Hajin (Hajin). At 55, he succeeded Hajin's Yahantei (Yahantei) and became a haikai master.
Meanwhile, in the field of painting, he is recognized as a master of Japanese Nanga alongside his contemporary painter Ike no Taiga (Ike no Taiga). He died in Tenmei 3 (1783).
