Basho initially elevated haikai, which was a literary form primarily focused on wordplay, to the realm of art through his journeys, including "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North). This exhibition will introduce Basho's own manuscripts, works by his predecessors who influenced him, and haiku poets of the Basho school, examining the activities of Edo-period haiku poets and their connections to Basho.
☆Highlights☆
〇 We will display 11 original manuscripts by Matsuo Basho, including 3 designated cultural properties of Yamagata City (includes permanent exhibition items).
〇 We will also exhibit Basho's original manuscript of the `kamon-kaishi` titled "世にふるも." This masterpiece reflects Matsuo Basho's thoughts on the journeys of past poets and literary figures, and subtly reveals his own philosophy of life.
