'Sleeping on a Horse' Ku-bun Kaishi, One scroll, by Matsuo Bashō, Jōkyō 1st-4th years (1684-87) [est.], Owned by Yamadera Bashō Memorial Museum
(With a portrait of Bashō-ō by Gessen)
Bashō
(Horse)
□Sleeping on a □, lingering dream
cherishing the moon
smoke of tea
[Explanation]
The poem and prose passage expresses Bashō's sentiments when he reached Sayo no Nakayama on the Tōkaidō during his journey for 'Nozarashi Kikō' in August, Jōkyō 1 (1684). The poem and prose passage 'Uma ni nete' ("Sleeping on a Horse") seems to have been favored by Bashō himself, as several of his authentic manuscripts are preserved. This calligraphic work with painting (gasun) has minor differences from any of those.
