September 1st - October 9th (Open daily during the exhibition period)
19 original works by Basho and 8 original works by Buson on display!
In the early Edo period, Basho brought a new style to the Edo haikai world, greatly influencing the haikai of his time. Furthermore, through journeys such as his 'Narrow Road to the Deep North,' Basho deepened his own haikai, succeeding in elevating what was once a language game to the realm of art.
However, after Basho's death, haikai became vulgarized. In response, a movement to revive Basho's style (Shōfū) spread nationwide, and Yosa Buson was prominent in this movement.
While active as a haiku poet, Buson also worked as a painter, leaving behind folding screens and emakimono depicting Basho's 'Narrow Road to the Deep North.' Buson also excelled at haiga, a fusion of haikai and painting, boasting that he was unparalleled in the country, and his expressions had a profound influence on later generations.
This exhibition showcases the works of Basho and Buson, the two great haiku poets who especially influenced haikai during the Edo period. Please enjoy their styles.
