Special Exhibition 'The Beauty of Edo Paintings - From Painters to Literati and Artists, Their Tastes and Charms -'
October 7, 2022 (Friday) - November 23 (Wednesday/Public Holiday) [Open every day during the exhibition period]
During the Edo period, in the world of painting, the Kano school, which had boasted influence since the Muromachi period,
receiving the current of the times shifting from military rule to civil governance, transformed from its traditional opulent
Momoyama painting style to the elegant and simple Edo Kano style.
Meanwhile, among other painters, works embracing free expression and painted with new sensibilities began to appear.
Furthermore, it became common for people other than professional painters to create art, with many paintings in the
bunjinga (literati painting) genre by scholars and others being produced.
Even the haiku poet Matsuo Basho, while associating with painters who studied the Kano school, learned painting techniques and left behind tasteful
painting works.
This exhibition introduces various paintings by Edo period painters, literati, haiku poets, and others.
We hope that through these works, you will be able to experience the beauty and charm of Edo painting.
