Special Exhibition "Basho and His Era —Literature, Art, and Travel in the Edo Period—"
November 2 (Sat) - December 16 (Mon), Reiwa 6 (2024) (Closed: Wednesdays (except November 13))
We introduce aspects of Edo period literature, art, and travel that influenced Basho's way of life and sensibilities.
☆Highlights☆
〇 We will unveil 17 handwritten works by Matsuo Basho (including those in the permanent exhibition), including one prefectural-designated cultural property and four city-designated cultural properties.
〇 The "Basho Letter (addressed to those involved with Dewa Sanzan)" is a valuable document that clarifies the circumstances of Basho's corrections to the "Tenyu Hoin Tsuitoku Kubun Kaishi" (a eulogy in verse and prose) that he wrote, which is displayed as a replica. It is known as a document whose authenticity as Basho's original handwriting was confirmed on the popular TV program "Kaiun! Nandemo Kanteidan" (Treasures! Anything Appraisal Team).
〇 We will exhibit both the city-designated cultural property "Huang Shigong Scroll" (Kōsekikōzu), which fully demonstrates Yosa Buson's realistic painting skills, and "Painting of Two Crows in Snow" (Setchū Sōazu), which is another of Buson's styles characterized by an emotional atmosphere. This exhibition allows visitors to truly experience the breadth of Buson's artistic expression.
