Special Exhibition: "Yokai" – Expressions of “Mononoke,” from the Edo Period to the Present Day –

June 14th to August 29th
(Closed days: July 3rd, July 24th, August 28th)
Yokai are also called “mononoke,” and have been featured in various literary and art works since ancient times. Matsuo Basho also described his visit to the Sessho-seki (Killing Stone) from the “Nine-Tailed Fox Legend” in his travelogue *Oku no Hosomichi* (The Narrow Road to the Deep North). Furthermore, Edo period painters such as Yosa Buson, Toriyama Sekien, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi left behind works depicting yokai, and their influence has been passed down to many artists and writers to this day. In this exhibition, we will explore how yokai and the otherworld have been expressed in paintings, literature, and other forms from the Edo period to the present day. Please enjoy discovering the impact yokai have had on Japanese culture, and the characteristics unique to each era.
