Special Exhibition: "Bashō's Circle and the Shōmon School - Bashō and the Edo Haikai Scene -"

    April 12 - June 9
         (Closed: April 24, May 15, June 5)

In the early Edo period, soon after Bashō emerged as a haikai master, he brought a new style to the Edo haikai scene and greatly influenced the haikai of his time. Furthermore, Bashō succeeded in elevating haikai, which had been a linguistic game, to the realm of art.
This exhibition introduces Bashō's haikai, as well as haikai predecessors such as Kitamura Kigin who influenced Bashō, friends such as Sodō, and people around Bashō. Furthermore, by introducing the works of those in his school ("Shōmon") who honed their skills together, we explore the charm and influence of Edo haikai during Bashō's active period.
