Yamagata's Hina dolls were one of the splendid cultural items brought from Kyoto and Edo by wealthy merchants who prospered through the safflower trade, utilizing Sea of Japan shipping and Mogami River navigation.
This exhibition will feature Hina dolls, from paper Hina to Kokin Hina, passed down in old Yamagata families, including the palace-style decorations of the Tanaka Family Residence, a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It will also introduce the history of Japan's traditional culture and display the Prefecturally Designated Tangible Cultural Property "Benibana Byobu (Safflower Folding Screen)."
