Matsu kazari haya kacho o isogunaru – Sampu
(Pine decorations, birds and flowers already hurry – Sampu)
[Explanation]
A poem that anticipates the arrival of spring's bird and flower viewing season, even while looking at the New Year's pine decorations.
Sugiyama Sampu (1647-1731), known as Koiya (Carp Shop), was in the business of supplying fish to the shogunate. He lived in Odawara-cho, Edo. He became Basho's disciple when Basho moved from Iga to Edo, and he financially supported Basho, including providing Basho-an (Basho's hermitage).
