Commemorating 120 years since Masaoka Shiki's passing
Special Exhibition: "Modern and Contemporary Haiku from Shiki"
November 26, 2022 (Sat) - February 6, 2023 (Mon)
[Closed during the exhibition period: Wednesdays from December onwards, December 29 - January 4]
Masaoka Shiki achieved an objective expression called 'shasei' (sketch from life) in haiku composition, in contrast to Edo haikai, which led to the rise of the Japan School's haiku reform movement. Shiki's activities breathed new life into haiku literature, laying the foundation for modern and contemporary haiku that continues to this day. This exhibition introduces the charms of modern haiku, featuring Masaoka Shiki, Kyoshi Takahama and Hekigodo Kawahigashi who played a part in the haiku reform movement, as well as famous haiku poets from the formative period of modern haiku and contemporary haiku.
