'Let's Go Out!' - Haiku and Prose on Kaishi, one sheet, by Matsuo Basho, Teikyo 4 (1687), owned by Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum.
Let's go out! To where we tumble, viewing the snow.
This writing is in the form of "kaishi."
In early December 1687, during his journey west from Edo, Basho visited a house in Nagoya and was treated to a feast. After drinking sake and feeling in good spirits, snow began to fall and accumulated quite a bit. At that point, he composed the poem, "Let's go outside and view the snow (an event to appreciate snow). Isn't it also good to slip and fall for the sake of elegance?"
